Basic Temporary Traffic Control Certification (BTTC)

To qualify for the SHA rate, you must be a SHA employee (not consulting for SHA).  If you are not a SHA employee please register at the industry rate.

The Basic Temporary Traffic Control Certification (BTTC) provides an entry level overview of Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) and Work Zone Safety.  This course is intended for newly hired people whose main role/responsibility will be roadway construction, maintenance, and other field operations.  While this is not mandatory pre-requisite for the Temporary Traffic Control Manager (TTCM) Course, it is expected to be a required course starting in 2027.

This course is intended to educate people not yet familiar with temporary traffic control on what they are and how they are intended to work. There are different types of work zones and activities within a work zone pose different hazards to workers and road users. Recognizing and controlling these hazards is crucial to all parties involved. The safety of crews and drivers is always the most important consideration in a work zone. Understanding the correct standards, requirements, and best practices for each type of work zone is critical.

• ​Training modules & the exam are inside the online course.
• Each person registered must have an email address unique to them. You cannot use an office email/administrative assistant's email to register multiple people.
• After registration, the course information will be made available within 2 business days.  The course can then be accessed at will, day or night.
• Training is not available on an iPad, phone, or other handheld device, it must be done on a laptop or desktop computer. 
• The Google Chrome browser must be used to access the training.
• The course, on average, takes 2-4 hours.
• You have two attempts to pass the exam. The exam has a time limit of two hours, which must be completed without interruption.
• Successful completion requires an 80% or higher score on the final exam. If both exam attempts are failed the individual may register and pay the fee to take the course again.
• Certification is valid for 5 years from the time the exam is successfully completed.
• Registration for the certification course is valid for 6 months.  If the course is not completed during that time the registration is forfeited and expired.
