Event Details

How can roadway design decisions give contractors greater flexibility in the field?

Join us for the second workshop in a series helping roadway designers understand the contractor’s perspective and apply that insight to more practical, constructable transportation projects. This half-day session will explore design approaches that support safe, efficient construction while reducing risk, delays, and unnecessary constraints.

Learn From a Real Project

A featured case study will examine SHA’s MD 4 at Suitland Parkway project, currently under construction. Hear perspectives from:

  • Concrete General — Contractor
  • Wallace Montgomery — Designer
  • SHA District 3
  • SHA Plan Review Division
  • SHA Quality Assurance Division

Through an open discussion of successes, challenges, and lessons learned, the panel will explore how design decisions affect construction operations and how future projects can better accommodate contractor needs.

What You’ll Take Away

The workshop will also include a presentation and facilitated discussion on effective limits of construction and other key constructability considerations. Participants will gain practical insight into:

  • Designing roadway improvements with greater construction flexibility.
  • Establishing effective limits of construction.
  • Recognizing design constraints that affect field operations and project delivery.
  • Applying lessons learned to improve outcomes for SHA, designers, and contractors.

Before You Attend

Participants who did not attend the first workshop are strongly encouraged to watch “Flexible Sequence of Construction for Maryland SHA Projects Training” on YouTube before attending.

Registration is limited to two attendees per company due to space constraints. This does not apply to SHA or MDTA attendees.

The workshop will be recorded and published on the SHA website.
